as you may know, i can be a little cavalier online.  which is to say, i tend to be cavalier in my life and try to give honest slices when communicating online.  and i honestly feel this is part of my job.  growing up i often heard fear-driven overstatements from people in spiritual leadership when it came to sensitive issues of conscience, namely alcohol consumption.  what i seldom saw were...

This Too Shall Be Made Right: Christmas & World...
as you may know, i’ve been both officially and personally supporting the work of world vision since the beginning of last year.  i love both their methods and motivations for caring for the poorest children in the world.  this is why, for the month of december i’m offering a special incentive to those who sponsor children through world vision.   the first 10 people to email me with...

Giving It Away: Additional Resources
For those of you who might have missed the links that were embedded in my recent article entitled “Giving It Away: How Free Music Makes More Than Sense”, here they are on their own.  Don’t trust me, don’t trust anyone.  Do your own research and let the data speak for itself.  And keep the conversations going.  These matters are worth our deliberation.   A great...

Giving it Away: How Free Music Makes More Than...
Music matters.  It’s so integral and pervasive in our culture that it almost feels invisible.  It’s even hard to imagine walking into almost any store without hearing music overhead.  Culture provides a constant soundtrack to our lives.  So it’s no wonder there’s so much discussion and debate about the business of music.  It feels like a matter of life or death.  And maybe it is. Lately, there’s...

my favorite itunes review of 'raising up the dead'...
Why is this listed under “Christian & Gospel”?  The album may have “spiritual overtones”, but they’re NOT Christian.  I’ve listened to the album three times and found that Jesus is not mentioned.  Not even once.  I won’t be listening any more.  What a waste.  I find it incredibly sad. discuss.

good art deserves to get made, or 'help my friend...
i believe very much in independent art.  i believe that great or important art getting made requires protecting the space and circumstances from which that art comes.  i also believe that all art is derivative, that it is in some way a product of everything that has come before it.  the thing made is being shaped by everything that has sub-consciously entered the mind of the one creating it. this...

DEMOCRACY VOL. 2
SIGN-UP FOR DEMOCRACY VOL. 2 NOW just a few days ago we started sign-ups and voting for ‘democracy vol. 2,’ the second annual album of cover songs that i’ll be recording all during 2011 (delivered digitally, at the end of each month all year).  as is implied in the album’s name, the songs are democratically decided upon by those who sign-up and vote.  last year i recorded 12 songs that were...

'Feedback' coming in ONE WEEK, NOV 2
for months i’ve been referring to my new record ‘feedback’ as a “worship” record.  but after reading these thoughts from my great friend/singer/songwriter/hymn writer matthew smith, i think i’m changing my language.  he describes it as a ‘soundtrack’ (i’ll let you read more below) and that feels much more accurate to me.  there are few friends...

full disclosure on the 'feedback' worship project
ok, i know i’ve joked about it before but it crystalized today and i’ve decided. seriously. i’m making a worship record this year. 8:45 PM Dec 28th, 2009 my announcement on twitter of nearly a year ago might have caught some of you off guard.  even some of my closest friends were suspicious when i first told them that i had decided to make a “worship” record.  but i also realize that some of you...

tonyfrompandora asked: Has anyone asked about the fact that "real" Caedmon's Call fans awaiting the new "Raising the Dead" CD, would actually want a real CD, but simply can't afford it? I consider myself a diehard Caedmon's fan. But the Tiers for ordering seem unfair given the fact that I already own all three Guild cd's, and the DVD. So I must spend $50 to gain a physical CD...

"radical" christianity
i’m getting tired of being interviewed for or asked to endorse books that are about “radical christianity.” especially when those books typically use that term to describe what should be garden variety, everyday christianity. it shouldn’t be the work of the “radical” to reach out to those who are different than them economically, racially or sexually. it shouldn’t be the “radicals” who are...
